Jose Margulis
Jose Margulis is a contemporary Venezuelan artist whose work explores the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional space. Using photography, digital printing, and acrylic sheets, Margulis creates illusionistic works in which volume, space, and light seem to change before his eyes. "I treat my three-dimensional pieces as light traps or secret planes, in which by controlling the location of their components, I am able to create interesting three-dimensional containers," he explained. “These designs are fully revealed by applying or focusing light on them. In a sense, the light becomes the ink that reveals the design following a three-dimensional template ”. Born in 1970 in Caracas, Venezuela, Margulis studied photography in college before working for his familys digital printing business. Combining these two skills with his interest in sculpture, Margulis began to make works inspired by different artists such as Jesús Rafael Soto and Naum Gabo. The artist currently lives and works in Miami, FL.
